Beware the Ides of March, Clavijo!

March 1 2019 (21:33 WET)

These days we have learned of the summons to testify as an investigated party of the President of the Government, Fernando Clavijo Batlle, for the 'Grúas case", whose events correspond to his time as councilor and later successor mayor of Ana Oramas in La Laguna. March 15 is the date set by the Court of Instruction of the City of Aguere.

Both, Oramas and her dolphin Clavijo, terrible managers, so critical here and in Madrid with Podemos and its confluences, should take note of how the 'cities of change' have been managed, eliminating previous debts and improving the lives of citizens, while La Laguna continues to drag the largest debt in its history, due to its disastrous management.

This judicial matter was preceded by attempts to call it a "political case", to hide behind the jurisdiction, to blame the Prosecutor's Office, to appear at its own request in Parliament, to some favor due by the TSJC, and in the end, it could not be: it is necessary to go to court, with the times and forms that it provides.

My absolute respect for the presumption of innocence of any citizen and the actions of some judges. However, I cannot resist adding that the same people who deny the condition of "political prisoners" to those of the previous Catalan Government, claim for their situation that of "political trial", when what we are talking about is an accusation from the prosecutor's office for "crimes of prevarication and embezzlement". Not a small difference, as a friend would say.

The Roman historian Plutarch tells us how Emperor Julius Caesar was heading that morning of March 15 of the year 44 before our Era, and on the way he met a seer, who had already warned him that something terrible was going to happen to him that March 15. Julius Caesar, smiling, said to him  "The Ides of March have come"; to which the seer replied compassionately: "Yes, but they are not yet over". And that day, he died assassinated and in the Roman Empire a change of cycle was witnessed.

Let us remember the importance of this date in the Roman calendar, as it coincided with the first full moon of the new year, with the omens that new and good things were going to happen. Ç

At some point, it was even associated with the scapegoat. And even Shakespeare, in his play Julius Caesar  (1599), stated: "Beware the Ides of March!"

This situation, two short months before the end of the IX Legislature in the Archipelago and, after 27 uninterrupted years of governments presided over by CC (Manuel Hermoso, Román Rodríguez, Adán Martín, Paulino Rivero and Fernando Clavijo), makes it exceptional.

For the first time, an active president, and at the time electoral candidate for the presidency by CC-PNC, has to appear as an accused before the courts of justice, and without the right to jurisdiction.

This should present a dilemma for his party, for his person and for his unconditional parliamentary support.

CC-PNC will have to explain to Canarian society what it is going to do with its accused candidate: is it going to maintain it at all costs?, what explanations is it going to give us to Canarian society?, where does CC set the limits of ethics and responsibilities?

The unconditional support of the minority government of CC, Asier Antona of the corrupt PP; and Casimiro Curbelo with his ASG; have so far linked their destinies to CC; but... are they willing to be part of this shipwreck?

We have heard Curbelo speak of "normalizing the situation" (there are many favors received during this legislature), while Antona resorts to gastronomy and speaks of "it is not a pleasant dish to go to the elections investigated". Others seem to remain lukewarm.

And finally, the president himself must make a determination. Faced with a situation of extreme gravity, such as having to appear as an accused before the courts, his dilemma is to submit his resignation or submit to a vote of confidence. There does not seem to be another reasonable way out of this delicate situation.

Once again, the Ides of March seems to bring us good omens.

I would like to interpret them as that we are witnessing an end of cycle, an end of regime: that of the Canarian Coalition in many of the Canarian institutions.

Tic-tac, the patrimonial sense with which they have exercised politics is ending. Tic-tac, the clientelistic networks that for three decades have woven in Canarian society are ending. Tic-tac, the end of policies of favors versus policies of rights and transparency, which the Canarian citizens deserve, is approaching.

A new era is coming, full of hope. And my best personal wishes for Mr. Clavijo in this difficult time.
