The Yaiza City Council informs the municipality's educational community and the population in general that it has suspended the School Olympics, scheduled to begin this Thursday, April 3, at the Yaiza Municipal Field, and also all sports and other activities scheduled from this Thursday in municipal facilities, due to the strong wind alert declared by the Government of the Canary Islands.
The Yaiza City Council, which recommends avoiding unnecessary travel and approaching areas near the sea, warns that the suspension of activities will remain until further notice.
As will be recalled, the General Directorate of Emergencies has declared an alert for strong winds and waves in Lanzarote and La Graciosa from 00.00 hours this Thursday. In addition, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) had previously declared a yellow warning for poor sea conditions and wind.
The gusts of wind will be very strong and may reach and exceed 70-100 kilometers per hour in Lanzarote, El Hierro, La Gomera, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura. Meanwhile, in La Palma and Tenerife, the alert will be maximum, with hurricane-force gusts of wind that may reach and exceed 110-130 kilometers per hour, especially in the summits.
For its part, the wave alert will affect all the islands of the archipelago and there will be strong swell to rough seas with northwest groundswell and waves of between 3 and 4 meters. There will be combined sea waves on the north and west coasts of La Palma, El Hierro, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote where the waves will reach between 4 and 5 meters in height.
