The Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, through the Social Welfare Department, carried out this Friday the traditional visit of elderly people from residences and day centers on the island to the Lanzarote Handicraft Fair, which is held in Mancha Blanca on the occasion of the Los Dolores Festivals.
The event, which has been taking place for years, allows elderly people, many of them with different degrees of dependency or reduced mobility, to enjoy the Fair with the necessary support. During the morning, they toured the different stalls, learned about the work of the artisans, and shared a space for meeting and coexistence outside their centers.
The Minister of Social Welfare of the Cabildo, Marci Acuña, highlighted that “for us it is important that dependent elderly people can continue to participate in activities that are part of the social and cultural life of Lanzarote. To make this possible, we facilitate transportation, accompaniment, and the support they need, so that they can come to Mancha Blanca, tour the Fair, and enjoy this day with safety”.
For her part, the Minister of Social Welfare of the Government of the Canary Islands, Candelaria Delgado, valued the continuity of this meeting and pointed out that “leaving the centers, sharing time with other people, and participating in deeply rooted celebrations like the Handicraft Fair has a very positive effect on the socialization of our elderly. For those with greater dependency, having adequate support is essential to be able to enjoy these spaces as well”.
In this edition, elderly people from the Domingo de Guzmán-Las Cabreras Residence, the San Roque Residence of Tinajo, the Insular Hospital, Amavir Haría, Amavir Tías, the Maraua Day Center, and Flora Acoge participated, accompanied by professionals, Cabildo staff, and volunteers, with special attention to those who require wheelchairs or other technical aids.
This activity has been taking place for years coinciding with the Los Dolores Festivals and has specific organization to facilitate the movement, accessibility, and care of attendees.
