The general secretary of the PSOE of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, and the Canarian socialist representatives in the Senate have held a coordination meeting to specify the roadmap to follow in the coming months, with the aim of joining efforts and continuing to work to meet the needs of all Canarians and boost the economic recovery of the archipelago.

Following the start of the political year in the Upper House at the beginning of this September, and with the start of the session in the Parliament of the Canary Islands next week, the Canarian socialists have shared information on the initiatives they are working on.

The coordinator of the Socialist Territorial Group of the Canary Islands in the Senate, the senator for Fuerteventura Paloma Hernández, highlighted the importance of aligning the party's action in all institutions, "especially at a time when the citizens of the islands need more than ever that all efforts are made to find effective solutions to the situation faced by thousands of families, self-employed and companies".

In this sense, the Canarian senators stressed that they are working in coordination with the different ministries on initiatives aimed at launching specific support measures for the tourism sector of the Canary Islands or to alleviate the effects of the economic crisis derived from the pandemic on the labor market, among others. "The Canarians need now more than ever that the Socialist Party makes all the necessary efforts to be able to look to the future with optimism," said Paloma Hernández.

Reactivation Plan

During the coordination meeting, the Economic and Social Reactivation Pact of the Canary Islands, approved by the regional Executive this week, was also discussed, an instrument that contemplates a programmed investment of 5,725 million euros for the period 2021-2023.

The objective of the Pact, which has concrete actions distributed in seven fundamental axes, is to unite all the political, social and economic agents of the Canary Islands in an "exceptional and extraordinary" agreement in the face of the health emergency.

The secretary of the Canarian socialists, Ángel Víctor Torres, stressed that, although the plan includes, in a global way, all the proposals and initiatives that will be developed in the coming months, "many of them have already been launched, such as tax deferrals, improvements in the Canary Islands Insertion Benefit or aid to self-employed workers, among others".

"We have achieved a broad consensus to specify each of the measures, both from political groups and from social and economic agents. Without a doubt, only through unity of action is it possible to move forward and face the consequences of the COVID-19 crisis," Torres stressed.

For her part, the socialist senator Paloma Hernández valued the participation and the "unity of action" that the Canarian Government has achieved for the elaboration of the Plan with unions, businessmen, groups and political parties, and rejected the attitude of Partido Popular and Ciudadanos for "not joining this consensus".

Finally, Paloma Hernández asked the Canarian senators belonging to other political forces to support the socialist initiatives in the Senate, regardless of the political color. "We have the great responsibility to put aside our differences and defend the Islands together. "If we do not, we will lose a unique opportunity to demonstrate that we work for and for the Canary Islands and what is worse: we will seriously jeopardize the future of the islands," she concluded.

The group of Canarian representatives in the Upper House is formed by Paloma Hernández, coordinator of the group and senator for Fuerteventura; Manuel Fajardo, senator for Lanzarote; Ramón Morales and Nina Santana, senators for the island of Gran Canaria; Olivia Delgado and Pedro Anatael Meneses, senators for Tenerife; Esther Carmona, senator for the island of El Hierro, and Pedro Ramos, autonomous senator.
