The Tías City Council has presented its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) 2022-2030, which includes measures that include the positions of the municipality's social agents and that give prominence to cyclists, pedestrians and public transport.
The presentation of this project - which has been carried out today - is part of the commemoration dates of the European Mobility Week, a fact that has been used to promote "the change of behavior in favor of active mobility, public transport and other clean and intelligent transport solutions", as explained by the mayor of the town, José Juan Cruz.
Bicycle network to limit the use of the car
The SUMP proposes to create a bicycle network throughout the municipality, completing the existing one in Puerto del Carmen, creating new lanes in streets such as Juan Carlos I, Anzuelo, Noruego and Reina Sofía and taking advantage of the traditional roads to create paths of coexistence of connection with all the towns, from Masdache to Conil passing through La Asomada, Mácher, Tegoyo, Tías and Puerto del Carmen.
"We want to create a cycle lane in the municipality that allows, on the one hand, not to eliminate parking spaces and, on the other hand, to promote the use of bicycles. For this reason, we propose to build an accessible upper walkway with a bicycle lane connecting the urban center and the institute area, in addition to widening the sidewalks of the underpasses," Cruz detailed.
For her part, Kerstin Kleinert, urban planner and mobility technician of the consulting firm Doymo - the company responsible for the elaboration of the plan - pointed out that "the bicycle lane network is designed for the inhabitants, not only for visitors, so that citizens can use it in their day.
Currently, 67% of trips to school are made by car, "and we want to lower those percentages," Kleinert said.
Promotion of public transport and more parking spaces
Beyond this, the project also proposes to establish two dissuasive parking lots connected with a circular urban bus line and with accessible sidewalks to Avenida del as Playas, to reduce traffic in Puerto del Carmen.
Regarding public transport, in addition to the creation of the circular line in Puerto del Carmen already mentioned, it is suggested, in Arrecife to connect the municipality with the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital (Arrecife), in addition to incorporating Masdache into the urban line 34 and providing the section of IES Tías with a double directional sense of the bus.
Finally, the proposals also include the regulation of parking in Puerto del Carmen through the creation of green zones for residents and workers and blue zones for itinerants, whose implementation should be agreed with those affected.
