The Heritage area of the Teguise City Council has paid for a sculpture to honor the women of La Graciosa. The commission will be carried out by the artist Rigoberto Camacho Pérez. “This is a project that responds to a popular request,” explains the Councilor for Heritage, Mar Boronat.

The sculpture, which will be located in the dock area of La Graciosa, will be worked in bronze with the same sculptor who has carried out other commissions arranged in the historical complex of La Villa and other locations in the municipality with which different traditions and cultural activities are valued of the municipality such as pelotamano, wrestling or the Easter ranch.

The sculpture, which is expected to be completed before the end of the year, recalls the role of the women of the eighth island, “to whom the survival of the town is partly due by breaking its isolation and going out to sell fish to the towns of Lanzarote, making the effort to go up and down the Risco de Famara, in some cases even barefoot,” says the mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque.

In short, an example of tenacity that will have its just reward with this piece that could be ready before the end of 2023.
