The Cabildo of Lanzarote will launch on March 2 the second phase of the action plan to restore the health of the island's palm trees. On this occasion, after the analysis of the specimens of San Bartolomé, Tías and Yaiza, it is the turn of the remaining municipalities of the island: Tinajo, Arrecife, Teguise and Haría.

The study corresponds to the entity Gestión del Medio Rural de Canarias (GMR Canarias) and, for its realization, an investment of 7,893 euros will be made, with an execution period of three months from the beginning of the action.

From the Island Corporation they point out that, as in the first phase of the project, the objective of the study is to "know the phytosanitary status of the palm trees located in natural and rural agricultural and domestic and urban environments, in order to undertake actions to save the island's palm grove".

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, stressed the efficiency of this study "to identify the main problems of the numerous specimens we have and to tackle them, stopping the plagues".

"In the first phase we determined that 80% of the inspected palm trees suffered from Diocalandra frumenti, serving as a starting point to begin the actions. In the same way we want to know the situation in the four remaining municipalities to begin to save one of the most representative symbols and tourist attractions of our Island", explained the president.
