The residents of La Restinga have been able to touch for the first time a piece of lava that emerges from the underwater volcano of El Hierro, and have even taken home part of this material. This was reported on Radio Lanzarote by the Lanzarote reporter Alberto Hugo Rojas, who has traveled to that island to be able to tell this "historic" news that has been happening since the beginning of October in the Canary Islands.

Rojas pointed out that "it was very exciting" the moment when the scientists showed the pieces of lava to the people of La Restinga this Sunday. "The residents needed to touch and see part of that volcano. Children and adults enjoyed picking up the pieces, still steaming when they arrived at port," the reporter said.

He also reported that the scientists exhibited these pieces of lava in the Sociocultural Center of this town, "which many residents attended to see and touch part of the volcano."

Alberto Hugo Rojas traveled to El Hierro three years ago and on that occasion found an island very different from the one he observes now. "Before there were many boats in the port, a lot of activity. Now you don't see anyone at sea, only the green stain," he said.

The attitude of the children

The Lanzarote reporter has been impressed by the attitude of the children towards this seismic-volcanic process that El Hierro is suffering. "In La Restinga there is a children's school, with very young children. The director told me that they suffered an earthquake in the middle of the class and the little ones quickly took refuge under the tables. In addition, it is impressive that from the window of the class they see the green spot and the bubbling," he said.

The tranquility of the little ones is not reflected in the adults, who are the ones who are "more restless." "They have felt the tremor in the early morning, they cannot sleep and they are worried. Some have even gone to Tenerife for a couple of days just to be able to sleep a little," explained Alberto Hugo Rojas.

In addition, the reporter recalled that the citizens of La Restinga "are aware that this process is not going to end from one moment to another" and the only tranquility they feel is thanks to the scientists, "who are right next door and who, despite having answered thousands of questions, continue to attend and explain to the residents what is happening" under their feet.
