The PSOE will ask the Government of Teguise, formed by the Canarian Coalition (CC), the Popular Party (PP) and the former councilor of VOX, this Wednesday in plenary session, about the total “loss” of a subsidy of 277,123 euros destined for the “Mercadillo” of La Villa de Teguise.
The subsidy, granted in 2022 by the Ministry of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands, chaired by Ángel Víctor Torres (PSOE), was aimed at improving the electrical installations, accessibility, self-protection and security of the traditional market that takes place on Sundays in the Plaza de La Mareta and annexes of the noble, royal and illustrious Villa de Teguise.
In the Canary Islands budgets for 2022, said subsidy was nominated, formalized by order 319/2022, of September 6, "without more than two years having passed, it has been invested by the government of Teguise for the intended purpose."
This November 27, by Decree number 2576/2024, of the mayor, Olivia Duque (CC), the refund of 277,123 euros to the Ministry of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands was processed for the unexecuted subsidy "an amount that will be increased with default interest to almost 300,000", the socialists predict.
Thus, the Decree itself provides “to refund the 277,123.40 euros as the amount of the unexecuted subsidy for the action ´Teguise Market Project´, since the activity for which it was requested has not been carried out". The socialists anticipate that, as the majority party in the municipality, “we will ask the government about this loss of economic resources, after more than two years since its concession and payment, in something that worries us, because we are talking about funds from another administration, of opportunities that are lost for Teguise and La Graciosa”, says Marcos Bergaz, socialist spokesperson.
"Let's see what the Government of Teguise, both the Canarian Coalition and its partners the Popular Party and the former VOX councilor, respond to this new return of hundreds of thousands of euros, because there are already too many losses of subsidies that could well have been invested in improving the municipality”, confirms Bergaz.
"Unfortunately - recalls the spokesperson - it is not the first time that they have renounced funds from the Government of the Canary Islands. Months ago we denounced the return of 150,000 euros destined for the expansion of the tourist information office of Costa Teguise, or more than 90,000 for the improvement of the timple museum in the Spínola palace”.
“As if that were not enough, we must add other ´waivers by omission´, such as not participating - by not presenting a single project - in the call from the Canarian Employment Service for training and alternating employment plans, endowed with 30 million euros; or the one corresponding to not correcting a subsidy request to update the General Plan, which meant that Teguise was left out”, confirms the socialist leader.
To conclude, the socialist group demands that the government of Teguise “stop wasting opportunities for the municipality and focus on management; we, as the majority party, will continue with our firm opposition to these renunciations that, due to their relevance, must be known by the citizens of Teguise and La Graciosa.”
