The spokesperson for the PSOE in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Ariagona González, has announced that the Socialist Group has registered a motion for the Governing Plan for Use and Management of the Chinijo Archipelago (PRUG) to regulate the "maximum number" of visitors that the space can accommodate daily.

"This summer, La Graciosa has been news in several national media that have highlighted the excessive increase in visitors," going so far as to say that "no place has as much tourist pressure as the eighth island, an old lost utopia," González recalled, who explained that "La Graciosa has received half a million visitors in a year, which, in addition, are especially concentrated in the summer months," reaching the figure of "428 tourists per inhabitant."

"No place has as much tourist pressure as the eighth island, an old lost utopia."

For the Socialist Party, the situation on the island has begun to be perceived in a generalized way as "unsustainable", putting at "risk the conservation of the space, the quality of life of its inhabitants and the satisfaction of those who visit it."

Once the 'Plan for the Management of Natural Resources' (PORN) has been approved by the government of Ángel Víctor Torrres in coordination with the Cabildo of Lanzarote, it is now time to "move forward with the PRUG, and it is this instrument that will allow, based on what is established by the PORN, to respond to the situation of overflow that La Graciosa is suffering."

In that sense, González has stated that the PSOE considers "two measures essential." The first is to establish a "maximum number of visitors per day that allows to reduce the pressure on the space" and, as has been pointed out, "to even improve the experience of these visitors."

The second measure would consist of establishing a "co-responsibility fee with the maintenance of the space through the payment of a fee" which, in any case, would be "different for visitors who stay on the island", recognizing that their "contribution to the economy of La Graciosa is greater than that of a day visitor."

"The double effect of limiting the number of visitors and generating income for the conservation of the city."

"It is not a radical or eco-revolutionary measure. At this moment, "Venice, with a center-right mayor, has just approved a five-euro fee for each visitor who does not spend the night in the city, seeking, as the Socialist Group proposes for La Graciosa, the double effect of limiting the number of visitors and generating income for the conservation of the city", the councilor concluded.
