The Port Authority has agreed to modify the terms and conditions for the Arrecife marina tender, as demanded by both the City Council and the Cabildo of Lanzarote. Thus, as confirmed by Ports to La Voz, a new clause will be introduced in the terms and conditions, clarifying that if the investment made for the construction of this dock is 20 million euros, the concession period will be 25 years, extendable for another ten years. However, if the investment is 10 million euros, as estimated by the Port Authority, the term will be established under the same terms as it already was, that is, 20 years plus five extendable.

This agreement was reached within the framework of a meeting that took place this Wednesday morning in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and was attended by Javier Sánchez Simón, as well as the president of the Cabildo, Pedro San Ginés, the mayor of Arrecife, Cándido Reguera, and the Councilor for Urban Planning, Pedro de Armas. The purpose of this meeting was to unblock the Arrecife marina tender, which the Cabildo itself has paralyzed on two occasions, first while waiting to analyze some technical reports and then rejecting the terms and conditions proposed by the Port Authority. And it is that although San Ginés did not attend the last meeting of the Ports Board of Directors, he later stated that the current terms and conditions could cause the tender to be deserted.

No to public investment

Although the Port Authority had committed to assume the work with its own funds and complete it within six months if the tender was deserted, both the Arrecife City Council and the Cabildo prefer that it be carried out with private investment. For this reason, they ask that the tender be called with an "attractive" specification, because they consider that if many companies submit, the project will be better for the island.

Now, the next step that the Port Authority will have to take will be to convene the plenary session of the Board of Directors again, which will probably be held on May 4. During that meeting, it could be resolved to put the construction of this dock out to public tender, and also to definitively cancel the previous tender, which had to be canceled after the annulment of the Special Plan for the Port of Arrecife.

An "important" infrastructure

The mayor of Arrecife, Cándido Reguera, has valued this meeting and has assured that it is "very important" for the capital of Lanzarote both "the construction of the cruise ship dock, which will already be operating next July, as well as the marina". In his opinion, it is an infrastructure that will generate "a lot of employment", while it represents a magnificent opportunity to take advantage of the opportunities that Arrecife has with the execution of these works.

Cándido Reguera has insisted that the start-up of this marina would mean the creation of numerous direct jobs and once that infrastructure is up and running, "many more indirect jobs." In addition, he assured that the capital's marina would also entail the opening of numerous service companies that would give work to many unemployed people.

The marina will be located in the inner part of the bay of Naos, at the height of the Arrecife Fishing School, and the maximum area to be occupied would be 167,000 square meters.
