The Popular Party councilors in the Yaiza City Council, Juan Monzón and Guayo Rodríguez, have expressed their support for the camel sector of the island and the activity they have been developing for decades in the Mountains of Fire.
The PP councilors consider that "it is important to recognize the work done by the caregivers so that the animals are in the best possible conditions when carrying out the activity." Thus, Monzón highlights the evolution and all the improvements that have been introduced over the years in order to comply with the new regulations and guarantee the welfare of the animals.
"The camel is for the camel drivers what the truck is for the truck drivers. The camel is their work tool and they are the first interested in the animals being in perfect condition because they are the ones who, precisely, guarantee the sustenance of their families," says Monzón, who regrets that this type of controversy arises at a particularly difficult time for this sector, affected for a year by the crisis and the tourist closure.
Monzón recalls that the ranchers have always shown their good work and their commitment to the rules, the island and the good tourist image. The most recent example, its adaptation to the COVID protocols last summer.
The Populars miss a public reaction from the Yaiza City Council. "We cannot explain how it is possible that to this day the municipal government remains silent and that, knowing how it knows the details of the activity, it does not show its support to the camel sector of Yaiza now that it wants to be put in the center of the target."
These are "the inconsistencies of the UPY and CC government, which one day say that they are going to ask that the transport of visitors by camel in the National Park be declared Heritage of Social and Cultural Interest and that now look the other way, allowing to question an activity from which dozens of families live in the municipality", denounce the councilors of the Popular Party.
In this sense, they ask the government team to "be consistent and not let the camel drivers of the municipality be put at the feet of the horses."
