The Plenary of the Cabildo has unanimously approved this Friday a motion from the Lanzarote en Pie - Sí Podemos group to create a subsidy plan for self-employed workers and micro-enterprises to alleviate the economic effects of Covid-19, which has "alarmingly increased" the unemployment rate on the island. "Lanzarote was the only island that did not contemplate this type of aid to small businesses", they emphasize from the formation
"Small and medium-sized companies are suffering the consequences of the crisis more virulently. The centrality of the tourism sector, the most affected by international mobility restrictions, has condemned the island to a forced reconversion", warns Podemos.
In this regard, he points out that "other Cabildos, such as Tenerife, Gran Canaria or Fuerteventura, have created special aid plans to compensate small companies and self-employed people so that they can resume activity and revitalize commercial and business life."
For the purple formation, "it is inexplicable that Lanzarote has not activated this type of aid taking into account the special economic characteristics of the island". “The absolute dependence on the tourism sector has condemned a large number of small businesses that have been forced into ruin”, said the group's spokesperson in the Cabildo, Myriam Barros.
In the debate on the initiative, the purple spokesperson recalled the need for "speed" in starting this measure so that the local commercial fabric "can have a break" and be revitalized. “Corujo has committed to starting the process during the month of August and we will be very vigilant so that it is not delayed a day longer than necessary and that the conditions and procedures are agile and efficient”, Barros concluded.
