The new manager of the General Hospital of Lanzarote, Pedro Moreno Ramis, is already working at full capacity to learn firsthand the needs and numerous shortcomings of the battered health center, whose management has fallen on his shoulders after his official presentation to the media last Thursday.

Moreno Ramis thus took over from Blanca Fraguela, who was heavily criticized from various sectors of Lanzarote society, but who apparently decided on her own to abandon the position that had caused her so much grief.

The island director of Health, José Manuel Sosa, spoke about the work of the new manager during the weekend at the Hospital this Monday morning. "He works too much. I even had to tell him to stop a little to rest."

With these flattering words, the director of Health defined the first days of work of Moreno Ramis. "The man has taken it with great enthusiasm." In fact, the manager worked during a large part of Christmas Eve Saturday and also held a meeting with Sosa on Christmas Day.

About Fraguela's management

Perhaps Blanca Fraguela's secrecy has earned her the bad reputation she carries, especially in the media. However, the island director of Health positively valued the management carried out by this woman in recent years.

"Doña Blanca has had to face a very difficult time for healthcare in Lanzarote, mainly due to the brutal increase in population." However, "the people of Lanzarote have been cared for, and for that you need to have good management knowledge and know how to do it."

Objectives for 2006

There are many needs for healthcare in Lanzarote and many wishes to improve in this area for the new year. For José Manuel Sosa, "the objective is to launch all the new infrastructures that will be inaugurated in 2006 and fill them with staff."

In the new year, the works of the Titerroy Health Center and the Tías Center will be completed.

Christmas Eve at the Hospital

Christmas is a date on which most people do not work and dedicate themselves to being with family and friends, enjoying a short vacation.

But there are professions that do not understand holidays, and that of doctors and nurses is one of them. Sosa explained that there is usually no special procedure to assign shifts on holidays.

Because these are decided many months in advance, what is applied is the "routine assignment." That is, it can happen to anyone.
