The Government of the Canary Islands took into consideration this Tuesday the proposals formulated by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport and Housing for the new Housing Plan of the Canary Islands, which will be in force until December 2008 and contemplates more than 89,000 actions throughout the Canary Islands and an investment of 326.846 million euros between the contributions of the Autonomous Community and the State.

This was specified by the Secretary of the Government Council and Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Transport, Antonio Castro, in a press conference after the meeting of the Government Council, which also approved the authorization of a credit of 15.6 million euros to the Canarian Housing Institute for the execution of the current Housing Plan.

The Council has also requested, through the urgent procedure, the corresponding opinion of the Economic and Social Council (CES) to, subsequently, initiate its parliamentary processing, explained Castro.

Likewise, he pointed out that the new 2005-2008 Housing Plan contemplates the realization of more than 89,000 actions throughout the Canary Islands, among which he highlighted the execution of 16,875 newly built homes and the rehabilitation of another 15,710 properties.

In addition, some 12,890 actions of aid for the acquisition of land suitable for building are planned, and 27,460 for the promotion of rent. Regarding aid to the purchaser, it is planned to dedicate some 4,639 actions and those dedicated to youth housing and used housing, 10,293 and 1,293 respectively.

The Executive recalls that the 2005-2008 Housing Plan has been formulated by the Government of the Canary Islands in accordance with the Guidelines for the elaboration of the Housing Plan and establishes the basic lines of action that will govern the housing policy of the Canary Islands Autonomous Community during the period 2005-2008.

Therefore, all the protected actions in terms of housing that are planned to be carried out during this period are included in the same document, both those established and financed exclusively by the Autonomous Administration, and those established in the specific agreements such as the one that has been agreed with the Ministry of Housing, within the framework of the Royal Decree approving the State Plan 2005-2008, to favor citizens' access to housing.

The Government Council also approved a credit assumption of 76 million euros with which the Executive assumes and releases the debt of Social Housing and Infrastructures of the Canary Islands (VISOCAN), contracted in works carried out to the Executive.
