The Anesthesia and Resuscitation service of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, is organizing the fourth edition of the Update Course on the Management of the Difficult Airway (VAD). This training meeting is aimed at healthcare professionals who intervene in critical situations related to airway management.
The course, with a duration of two days, is being held since yesterday, June 12, in the assembly hall of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, and has the participation of more than sixty professionals from different hospitals. The training is designed for anesthesiologists, intensivists, emergency professionals, otolaryngologists, resident physicians, family doctors, and specialized nursing staff.
This edition of the course aims to update and reinforce knowledge in advanced intubation techniques, use of alternative devices, action plans, and application of international algorithms in the management of the difficult airway, both in hospital and out-of-hospital contexts. The mixed format of the course is oriented towards clinical excellence.
The management of the difficult airway refers to clinical situations in which the healthcare professional experiences difficulty in ventilating the patient with a facial mask or in endotracheal intubation.
Innovation and advanced clinical practice
After an initial theoretical phase, the sessions are mostly developed through specialized practical workshops, through which all participants rotate. In addition, real cases are addressed through live videoconferences from the operating rooms of the Molina Orosa Hospital, providing an eminently didactic approach.
The program includes specific training on airway management in pediatric, obstetric, and obese patients, as well as the use of advanced devices and complex ventilation techniques. Strategies aimed at preserving adequate oxygenation of patients are also addressed, thus improving their safety and quality of care.
Reference speakers
The course includes the participation of prestigious speakers from the University Hospital of the Canary Islands, the Insular-Maternal and Child University Hospital Complex, the University Hospital of La Palma, the Hospital of Fuerteventura, as well as the Dr. Negrín University Hospital and the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital. In addition, there are doctors from Molina Orosa itself and professionals from the Canary Emergency Service (SUC).
During the opening ceremony, the manager of Health Services of Lanzarote, Pablo Eguia, highlighted "the high level of specialization that this training has acquired throughout its editions, becoming a regional reference in the field".
The head of the Anesthesia service of the Molina Orosa Hospital, Carlos García, and his team expressed their "satisfaction for the high participation in this fourth edition, which in their opinion reaffirms the commitment of healthcare professionals in the archipelago to continuous training and clinical safety of the patient".
