The Local Police of Arrecife intensifies control over scooter drivers and applies sanctions to offenders

The Local Police of Arrecife is intensifying control over drivers who circulate on scooters through the capital of Lanzarote. The Arrecife City Council reminds that the regulations of the General Directorate of Traffic prohibit the transit of these personal vehicles on sidewalks and pedestrian areas of the city.

The deployment of the agents of the Local Police of Arrecife is allowing the sanctioning of VMP drivers (including electric scooters) for non-compliance with these regulations. The agents are finding that scooter drivers are circulating on sidewalks and pedestrian areas, which are prohibited in the regulations, and something more dangerous in mobility, some 'irresponsible' people do it in the opposite direction to the circulation of those roads.

The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, directly responsible for the Local Police, has promoted the greater presence of agents in the streets of the city to preserve the safety of pedestrians, and drivers who do respect and abide by the traffic regulations.

The police controls are being carried out both in the morning, afternoon and evening.

In this regard, the Local Police of Arrecife reminds of the regulations that users of personal mobility vehicles (VMP) must comply with in their urban journeys and do so safely. All users must meet these conditions:

  • It is prohibited for VMPs to go on sidewalks, pedestrian areas, crossing points, highways, dual carriageways, interurban roads or tunnels in urban areas. In Arrecife, it is only allowed to circulate scooters on the urban road.
  • The speed of these vehicles must be between 6 and 25 km/h.
