The mayor of Haría, Alfredo Villalba (PSOE), has demanded from the Cabildo of Lanzarote that it put into operation the northern pipeline and has recalled the urban planning competencies of the first island institution.
In a press release, the council has reported that it has sent "all relevant reports" to the first institution, "prioritizing at all times the defense of the interests of the residents”.
Villalba has stressed that in a letter sent this Tuesday to the Cabildo de Lanzarote and to the Department of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands that “if said administrations do not agree with the municipal technical reports, Law 4/2017 on land in the Canary Islands, in its articles, specifically in article 334.3, establishes the possibility of resolving by motivating the discrepancy, which would legitimize, where appropriate, the execution of
the works”.
Furthermore, in a previous letter sent on February 25, 2026 to the Cabildo de Lanzarote, it requested that the project be declared as project of public or social interest, in such a way that the immediate execution of the project can be carried out.
However, the Haría City Council has assured that "it has not received a response" from the Cabildo de Lanzarote regarding this request "which would expedite said project in its case".
Therefore, the mayor has announced that, "given the passivity shown by the Cabildo", he will request a meeting with the political groups, so that the initiative for declaration of general interest can be brought to an insular plenary session as
soon as possible.
“The Haría City Council will continue working and showing total transparency for the execution of this work, complying with current legislation and doing everything possible to guarantee a basic necessity such as water,” he concluded.
