The Island Water Council has authorized the project that will allow El Golfo to have sewerage and a wastewater treatment plant, according to the announcement published this Thursday in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands.

This information arises after the mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, reported on January 15 to the Island Water Council that it could use two million euros, from its own funds, to "execute the long-delayed project" of sanitation of this coastal town.

These statements by the southern mayor were given after a monitoring commission of the State, the Cabildo and the City Council in which Noda said that "it was clear that there would be no further extension of the subsidy" and that "since last year the presidency of the Island Council, the Island Water Council and also the Consortium were asked to update the prices of the project, which already last November was around 1.6 million." At that time, the municipal institution demanded from the institution chaired by Oswaldo Betancort "greater diligence".

"We have managed to unblock, in record time, a work agreed with the Ministry since 2017. And we will put all our effort into meeting the deadlines for its execution because we understand the need for this infrastructure," says the president of the Cabildo and the Island Water Council of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort. The agreement signed with the Ministry of Ecological Transition establishes that the works must be executed before November 2025.

"The paralysis that the project suffered from May 2021 until the processing of the file was re-promoted by the Water Consortium, already in this legislature, must be replaced by a daily monitoring of the procedures because we cannot afford to lose a single day," adds the president of the Cabildo.

The aforementioned agreement with the Ministry, signed on December 14, 2017, contemplates a subsidy of one million euros and the start of the sanitation works before November 2025, given that its non-execution would force the return of the total amount plus interest.

"With the agility that the administrative procedures allow, the Water Consortium of Lanzarote, which received the authorization this Thursday, is already preparing the specifications for the bidding of the work," says the Minister of Water of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Domingo Cejas.

"We have worked and will work so that the town of El Golfo finally has the demanded sanitation and not have to return that amount and the interest for the neglect of the past," adds the councilor.

This project falls within the framework of action of the Cabildo of Lanzarote for the improvement of the island's hydraulic infrastructures, guaranteeing an efficient and environmentally friendly sanitation system.
