One more summer, the Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Department of Agriculture, promotes the campaign for the collection, processing and milling of olives among the island's farmers. In this way, the island's oil mill, located on the Experimental Agricultural Farm, is launched, which in this new edition plans to triple its activity, compared to last year, with the collection of more than 5,000 kilos of olives.

Thanks to the Cabildo's initiative 'The Ecological Olive Grove', launched several years ago, Lanzarote has a plantation of nearly 10,000 olive trees. “More and more island farmers are interested in this crop”, says the Minister of Agriculture, Ángel Vázquez, “since it adapts very well not only to the island's terrain but also to our climate”.

“We are achieving that each year, the production of virgin olive oil, 100% from Lanzarote, is of better quality and flavor and we hope that in this new edition 600 liters or more will be reached.”

For the councilor in charge it is “extremely important to continue supporting and promoting this type of initiative that allows us to diversify local productions and obtain excellent raw materials.”

Oil mill opening period

Those farmers who wish to use the oil mill service for milling their olives must submit their application, until August 28, at the Experimental Agricultural Farm, from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., by calling 928 598500 ext 3600. The collection of olives will take place during this month of August and until September 30.

From the Department of Agriculture, they remind that the phytosanitary state of the olives must be optimal, clean of leaves and diseases, since if the olive is not in good condition it will not be collected.

Likewise, the oil resulting from the milling of the olives will be analyzed for residues in the official laboratory. If the analyzes result in residues harmful to health, above the parameters established by the regulations, said oil will not be delivered to the producer but to an authorized manager for collection.
