The Insular Directorate of the General Administration of the State in Lanzarote, in coordination with the Commissioner for the celebration of 50 years of Spain in Freedom, has developed on the island a wide range of initiatives aimed at highlighting the profound transformation that Spain has undergone in half a century of democracy.
The program Spain in Freedom. 50 Years aims to highlight the achievements of the past five decades, bring knowledge of this process closer to all citizens—with special attention to young people—and recognize the individuals and public and private entities that have contributed to building the democratic Spain we know today.
In the words of Carmina Gustrán, the program's Commissioner, "celebrating half a century of freedom is also celebrating the plurality that defines us as a country. Spain is a diverse state, rich in territories, languages, traditions, and cultural expressions. That is why it makes sense for the commemorative program to be decentralized, so that every corner of our country can participate and contribute its voice to this celebration of the democratic values we share."
Fifty years of democracy have allowed Spain to be an open, egalitarian, plural, and diverse country today, consolidated as the fourth-largest economy in the European Union and a benchmark in social rights, public services, welfare, economic dynamism, and international cultural projection
A visible celebration in the island's municipalities
As part of this commemoration and under the coordination of the Insular Directorate, banners for the program have been installed in the town halls of Haría, Tías, and San Bartolomé, as well as on the facade of the Insular Directorate of the General Administration of the State Administration, contributing to making this anniversary visible in public spaces.
Youth Protagonism: Collaborative Mural in Tías
One of the most significant initiatives has been the creation of a collaborative mural in the municipality of Tías, carried out with the active participation of young people. The work captures their visions on freedom, equality, coexistence, and the future of democracy, reinforcing the bond between new generations and the values that have guided these fifty years of social, cultural, economic, and political progress.
Recognition Ceremony at the Insular Directorate
The program in Lanzarote culminated in a public ceremony at the Insular Directorate of the General State Administration, where an institutional recognition was given to individuals, public and private entities that have contributed to the strengthening of democracy and the consolidation of shared values that define Spain today.
This act underscored the importance of the collective work carried out over these five decades, which has made it possible to build a modern, socially advanced, cohesive country fully integrated into the national project.
