The Canary Islands Government will increase the budget items allocated to fire consortia by more than 40% during the current term, from 3,300,093 euros in 2019 and 2020, to 4,676,105 in 2023 in the archipelago as a whole.

This was indicated by the Minister of Public Administrations, Justice and Security, Julio Pérez, during the plenary session held this week in the Parliament of the Canary Islands.

"La Graciosa needs special treatment"

In relation to the development of this service in La Graciosa, Pérez pointed out that before implementing it, it is necessary to "analyze the mechanism to be applied, because permanent vehicles are needed on the island and communication with it must be ensured".

“La Graciosa requires not only money, but a particular treatment and sensitivity that we have to learn from the citizens and institutions of Lanzarote to apply to our policy,” the counselor indicated.

Increase in amounts

Specifically, Pérez has detailed that, in 2019 and 2020, the Security, Emergencies, Rescue, Prevention and Fire Extinction Consortium of Lanzarote received a total of 332,345 euros, while in 2021 the contribution from the regional government registered an increase of 12%, with the territory of Lanzarote receiving 372,227 euros.

For its part, in 2022 it has been increased again by 26.51% more in relation to 2021, with a total of 470,921 euros; this allocation being consolidated also for the year 2023.

In addition, Pérez has indicated that this budget amount does not include the almost 730,000 euros that have been divided between Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife and that will be added as a result of the interventions of the consortia in different emergencies that have taken place in the archipelago, and of which the island of Lanzarote will receive an amount of 143,300 euros.

Based on these data, the counselor has insisted that throughout this mandate the "what was promised in terms of fire consortia has been fulfilled, since it has been budgeted and paid”.

“The consortia are not only fire consortia, they are emergency consortia, which intervene in another series of services, which are highly professionalized,” Pérez remarked, clarifying that the executive has in mind “to expand an autonomous and regional idea” of these bodies and maintain this policy of reinforcements and expansion of their functions.
