The Arrecife Governing Board has finally shelved the license to “restructure” the building of the old Hotel Oriental, after warnings it has received from the Heritage service of the Cabildo and even from the College of Architects of Lanzarote, which threatened this Thursday to go to court.
As sources from the capital's government group have confirmed to La Voz, they have decided to request a new municipal legal report before submitting the granting or not of this permit to a vote. In this regard, they assure that they already had favorable opinions, but later received a warning from the Cabildo about the heritage values of this historic building in the capital.
Now, after the controversy unleashed after learning of that Cabildo report, the authorization has been suspended, pending taking it to the next Governing Board, and several councilors have indicated that they will not give their favorable vote unless there is a favorable report from the City Council technicians and endorsed by the secretary.
Regarding the two properties that have just been demolished on León y Castillo street, municipal sources indicate that this authorization was granted about eight months ago, and they argue that in that case the Cabildo had not made any warnings, unlike what has happened now with the Hotel Oriental building.
For its part, the College of Architects demanded this Thursday all the files, since it considers that a "attack against Heritage" may have been committed and does not rule out taking legal action.
