The budgets formulated by the government group of Tías, with a socialist majority, have been approved in plenary session on Tuesday morning, although without the support of the opposition. Thus, the City Council of the municipality has established for this year a budget of 26.6 million euros, which represents an increase of 4.87% compared to 2006. This increase is due to the growth in direct taxes, which stand at 9.8 million euros.
The largest item in the budget will be allocated to personnel expenses, which represents 40% and is equivalent to an increase of 2% compared to last year's figures. This expense is reflected in "the incorporation of seven new local police positions and three more for the Citizen Service Department" as explained by the mayor, José Juan Cruz Saavedra.
Regarding the budget increase, Cruz stated that "there is a positive balance of 2.5 million euros from the 2006 budget that will be incorporated into basic infrastructure in the different towns of the municipality" and that it will be invested "mainly in asphalt and lighting" given "the needs that the residents of Tías have raised with us in the successive meetings we have held".
In the area of expenses on current goods and services, which represents the second most representative item in the budgets, are the Promotion and Rehabilitation Plan for the tourist area of Puerto del Carmen with 190,000 euros, the repair of schools with more than 300,000 euros, the project for improvement and adaptation of public roads with the same amount or the plan for renovation, conservation and maintenance of lighting with 200,000 euros.
Thus, the mayor described the budget as "realistic and investor" since "it includes in its revenue items the real forecasts of the Corporation for this year, rigorously foresees compliance with its spending obligations and gives priority to investments with works of a marked social nature".
