The Minister of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Canary Islands Government, Sebastián Franquis, announced this Tuesday in the Parliament of the Canary Islands that his department is finalizing the bidding for the drafting of projects and works management in order to start at the end of this year the construction of 200 official protection homes in the municipality of Arrecife, the first social homes to be built in Lanzarote "in the last 26 years".

In his parliamentary response to the PP deputy and mayor of Arrecife, Ástrid Pérez, the minister recalled that the 200 homes to be built in the capital area of Maneje will also be the first to be built of the nearly 6,000 new construction VPO planned in the Canary Islands Housing Plan 2020-2025.

“We agree that the analysis of the situation of VPO in Lanzarote is regrettable. That is why the Canary Islands Government has especially prioritized this island within the first batches of construction of the new Housing Plan, the first ones we are going to build, aware, as you have rightly said, that it has been more than 25 years since a public house was built on this island,” said Franquis.

The Maneje homes are divided into three plots transferred by the Arrecife City Council to the Canary Islands Housing Institute. This collaboration agreement with the Arrecife City Council regarding the promotion of 200 homes in the Los Geranios Urbanization (Maneje) will enable the construction of three multi-family buildings with heights of 5 floors with 67, 67 and 66 homes and parking spaces each. This action by the Ministry will allow 200 families in Lanzarote to have a "decent" home at a time when "it is very difficult to find a house to reside in for rent".

Bidding for the drafting of the projects "in the coming days"

The budget that the Ministry allocates to the bidding of the three Arrecife projects amounts to 1.1 million euros, and includes not only the drafting of the projects but also the subsequent management of the works. The bidding, which will begin in the coming days, will allow the award of this drafting of projects that have to be delivered to the Ministry within three months, so it is feasible to tender the execution of the works before the end of this year. However, Minister Franquis warned the PP deputy that the dates will depend on the evolution of the necessary administrative processing.

“Our objective, I insist, is that the deadlines that we have set can be met because in the coming weeks the Government will approve the expense to tender the construction projects of these 200 homes in Arrecife,” added the minister. "I also have to tell you that, in addition to the construction of new housing, we are already buying housing, as you know, through Visocan. 31 million euros that we have allocated to the purchase of more than 300 semi-finished homes, many of which, I estimate, can be delivered at the end of this year or the beginning of the next, which is also a way to execute the Plan and make homes available to the most vulnerable families, which is at this time what matters most to the Government to combat the housing emergency and also support the economic boost in our Community,” concluded Sebastián Franquis.
