The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Security and Emergency Consortium chaired by Marcos Bergaz and in collaboration with the Mapfre Guanarteme Foundation, put an end to the sixth edition of the drowning prevention campaign 'This summer, safe dip', an initiative that has been transferred to all the municipalities of Lanzarote and the eighth island, in which more than 2,000 people have participated.

The campaign was closed with a simulation and a ceremony held at El Reducto Beach in Arrecife, which was attended by Councilor Marcos Bergaz, the Councilor for Beaches of the Arrecife City Council, Ángela Hernández, and the Director of the Lanzarote Health Area, Noelia Umpiérrez.

Marcos Bergaz began his speech by paying tribute to the student of the PFAE “Safe Beaches” of the Tías City Council who died before the start of the campaign and thanking the work carried out by the staff of the Cabildo, the Consortium, the Canary Health Service, the Mapfre Foundation, as well as the collaboration of the City Councils of Lanzarote, Civil Protections, Local Police Corps, NGO's Red Cross, Emerlan, REN, Boluntis and citizens in general for their positive response.

“We transfer different training and reaction actions to the population of all the municipalities to prevent drowning and accidents on the coast and in swimming pools, and also to know how to act when, unfortunately, any of these incidents occur,” said Marcos Bergaz.

“The two months of the campaign and the participation of all the entities mentioned has allowed us to reach more than 2,000 people, of all ages in Lanzarote and La Graciosa, instilling the maxim of caution in the sea and the pool, to avoid unnecessary risks,” Bergaz highlighted.

The Councilor for Beaches of Arrecife, Ángela Hernández, also thanked the wide participation of the capital's citizens in the actions programmed by the Consortium and the great work carried out by the staff dedicated to teaching the prevention techniques so useful for safety on the coast.

For her part, the director of the Lanzarote Health Area, Noelia Umpiérrez, stressed the importance of developing this kind of projects to raise awareness among people of the dangers of the coasts and to train citizens to face these dangers, as well as highlighting the great acceptance that the campaign has had.

By municipalities, the Security and Emergency Consortium completed 234 actions in Tías (Puerto del Carmen); 97 in La Graciosa; 136 in Costa Teguise (Teguise); 113 in Playa Blanca (Yaiza); 225 in Arrieta (Haría); 221 in Tinajo; 225 in Playa Honda (San Bartolomé), more than 100 in Arrecife and 556 in summer camps.
