The president of the Cabildo, Pedro San Ginés, has warned Thomas Cook of the intention of both the Cabildo and the Lanzarote Foreign Promotion Society to "reconsider the current agreements" they maintain if the tour operator continues with the "announced discount on billing." In this sense, San Ginés has assured in a press release that he supports the island's tourism business community in the face of Thomas Cook's intention, which wants to charge Lanzarote hotels for the losses it suffered due to the ash cloud from the Icelandic volcano.
The president of the Cabildo sent a letter this Tuesday to the executive president of Thomas Cook, Michael Beckett, in order to show his "disagreement in understanding that the measure is totally unjustified, being burdensome for the sector and detrimental to the good relations that have been established between the two parties for years."
In this way, the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the Foreign Promotion Society are positioned in the same line as the Government of the Canary Islands and other islands, who have also shown their disagreement with the approach taken by Thomas Cook. Furthermore, from Lanzarote, the president of the Cabildo intends to raise an initiative within the Canary Islands Federation of Islands (FECAI) "with the aim of adopting a joint agreement, in defense of the interests of the tourism business community of the islands, against the intentions of the operator."
