The opening of the Papagayo campsite, in Playa Blanca, may be getting closer. The vice president of the Cabildo, Fabián Martín, assured this Friday morning in "Buenos días Lanzarote" of "Radio Lanzarote", that "there is full and good willingness" for this space to be opened for Easter. The Yaiza City Council decided to close the door of this campsite due to the economic difficulties it is going through.

Martín has stated that the Cabildo and the Yaiza City Council have drawn up accounts that "allow the possibility" of opening the campsite at Easter. "I hope that the thousands of campers who have enjoyed these facilities for years can do so now as well," he insisted. "I harbor that hope", he pointed out.

Thus, both the mayor of Yaiza, Gladys Acuña, and Martín have jointly met with representatives of camping groups to gather economic information in order to set a scenario that allows the campsite to be opened. "All the responsibility does not have to fall on the City Council, since it only supports a small number of campers from the area who use this space." "A shared effort must be made between the entire island, between city councils and the Cabildo," he stated.

"It cannot further harm the municipal coffers"

For its part, the Yaiza City Council assures that it is trying to reach an agreement with various institutions such as the Cabildo, the Government of the Canary Islands and the city councils, but that no agreement has yet been reached. Next week it could be definitively decided whether the establishment will open or, on the contrary, remain closed.

The City Council insists that the opening of the space cannot harm, even more if possible, the municipal coffers that, as a result of the crisis, are going through serious difficulties. For this reason, they hope to obtain an agreement so that people can camp in Papagayo.

800 places in the Famara campsite

Campers, however, will have places for up to 800 people to practice this activity on the beach of San Juan de Caleta de Famara. The Teguise City Council will only allow the use of the area from April 4 to 12, with prior and mandatory registration.

The reservation period is now open and the requirements are that there be a minimum of two people per place and a maximum of four. The Teguise City Council, as reported through a statement, will make this year "an extra effort", both in cleaning services and in the surveillance of the area by the Local Police to maintain order in the facility.

The City Council foresees that, if the Papagayo campsite finally does not open its doors, all the places in Famara will be occupied, so it demands strict compliance with the rules of coexistence in the enclosure. If the behavior of the campers is not adequate, they will be expelled and will be denied permission to camp in the future.

On the other hand, the Cultural Association of Campers of Puerto Muelas has called a meeting for the 31st at 8:00 p.m. at the San Francisco Javier Sociocultural Center in Arrecife, which aims to defend this activity. This meeting will try to save this activity, keep the Papagayo campsite open and guarantee the future of this facility.
