The Plenary Session of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, held this Wednesday, has approved allocating a subsidy of three million euros to the Island Water Consortium to materialize the project of integral renovation of the distribution network for the supply of drinking water in Tinajo.

Currently, the obsolete distribution networks are unable to satisfy the demand, and specifically, the towns of Tinajo, Mancha Blanca, and Tinguatón are in a critical state that prevents the regular supply of drinking water, so, unfortunately, cuts are continuous.

The Minister of Water, Domingo Cejas, states that "the Cabildo is undertaking different actions to renovate and expand the island's water infrastructures, and in this case, it will allocate a subsidy of three million euros to the Water Consortium of Lanzarote to finance a large part of this important work to completely renovate the drinking water network of Tinajo, whose total budget amounts to more than 5 million euros and where the Consortium will contribute the rest of the investment with own funds."

During the plenary session, the Minister explained that "the problem of the supply of the nucleus of Tinajo is not only due to the poor condition and insufficient size of the distribution networks, but there are two other added problems: the lack of regulation and water storage capacity in the area due to the existence of two out-of-service tanks in the Trastinache mountain. And on the other hand, the second problem related to the incapacity of the current central transport network."

The renovation of the Tinache tanks and the associated EBAP are currently underway, and the renovation and resizing of the new central transport network is in process. "We have addressed and finalized the processing of authorizations to undertake these works in record time," acknowledges the Minister, who points out that "finally, the water problem in Tinajo is being addressed, which required and demanded urgent action on its hydraulic network, but which no one, until now, had attended to."

Commitment to efficient and sustainable management

For his part, the President of the Island Council, Oswaldo Betancort, points out that "one of the primary objectives of this Government group is to work jointly and together with the town councils and the Government of the Canary Islands to carry out an efficient and sustainable management of the integral water cycle in Lanzarote and La Graciosa."

"For this," Betancort emphasizes, "in this year of government we have recovered millionaire investments for the improvement of the island's water infrastructures, which are totally obsolete, in addition to launching an emergency action plan valued at 90 million euros to renovate, among other actions, the supply network in numerous streets of the island, specifically those with a greater number of breakdowns and which will extend until the year 2027."

The president also highlights the processing of investments for almost 62 million euros, of which 24.4 have been recovered from the agreement with the public company SEIASA for irrigation in the northern area of the island and another 37 and a half million from the agreement with ACUAES for the modernization and improvement works of the Arrecife and Tías treatment plants.

Finally, Oswaldo Betancort also highlights that, in terms of agricultural water, more than 6 million euros will also be allocated to the Island Water Council for the Tinajo-Teguise Irrigation Plan that will help alleviate the scarcity of water for the island's farmers and recover the agricultural sector.
