The Department of Historical Heritage of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has initiated a new file for the declaration of an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), on this occasion on the Islote de Fermina, in Arrecife, in the category of Monument. The beginning of the process, approved on May 24, was published this Monday, June 6 in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC).

According to the Cabildo, César Manrique's work on the Islote de Fermina was mainly inspired by "the understanding and comprehension of the natural environment where it is located". "These are facilities that were designed with a clear objective: to enjoy, contemplate and admire the Marina de Arrecife, as an enclave of enormous natural beauty inserted in an urban fabric," the report adds.

For the BIC complex of the Islote de Fermina, a series of measures are established, such as that the increase of floors is not allowed, and the current number must be conserved.

In addition, in relation to the possible signage and terrace-type furniture, it must respond to the following criteria: "luminous signs are not allowed; the lighting of the signs may have indirect lighting; the furniture (chairs and tables) will be made of wood; the umbrellas will be white or off-white, without valances; No element of the furniture may provide any type of commercial advertising, except for a small logo; and for the design of the exterior furniture, artisanal elements will be promoted".

As for the area delimited for the protection environment, due to the singularity of the Islote de Fermina, it encompasses the group of islets as well as the marine area that includes Fermina. These protected islets are the Islote de las Aves, the one of La Lagarta and the one of El Quemado. Likewise, in the surroundings of the BIC, the interventions and actions that are carried out "may not have a negative impact on the contemplation, visualization or appreciation of the patrimonial values of the property", and the sporting events or actions that are carried out in the surroundings must have a "temporary" character, never "general". Finally, in the surroundings, electrical or telephone lines will not be installed, which must be buried.

The Islote de Fermina joins the files already initiated by the Cabildo this year, such as the Hotel Gran Meliá Salinas, or those that include numerous works by Manrique, such as Los Jameos del Agua and its auditorium, the El Diablo restaurant in Timanfaya, his house in Haría and the headquarters of the Foundation.

Likewise, the Church of San Marcial and three properties on Calle Real in Arrecife, the old Hotel Oriental, El Mercadillo and the building that housed the Tamaragua store, are also in the process of being declared Assets of Cultural Interest.
