The Cabildo of Lanzarote has hired the services of a team formed by José Carlos Díez, Daniel Lacalle and the former Minister of Tourism, Miguel Sebastián, who they say are "three of the best economists in Spain". The objective is for them to jointly prepare a report on the economic impact of Covid-19 in Lanzarote and a strategic plan to emerge from the crisis derived from the coronavirus.

"Díez, Lacalle and Sebastián will divide the analysis tasks, so that each one will make their specific disciplines and knowledge available to the report to make different proposals", specify from the Cabildo, which adds that "one of the objects of study will be the tourism sector -especially hit by this situation- and that it has shown that Lanzarote, like many other Spanish destinations, is extremely dependent on this sector as an economic engine".

"This crisis will change us forever, not only Lanzarote as a destination, but also the world around us, and we must anticipate the changes that are to come and adapt to them", said the president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, referring to "the social and economic complexity represented by the health crisis of the coronavirus and the magnitude of some international decisions that have been taken recently".

"The adaptation effort required by the new normality requires expert advice and we have started by resorting to a powerful panel of economists to help us draw the new scenario in which we find ourselves", explained Corujo, who has advanced that this is the beginning of "a process of broader scope".

Regarding this project, which is part of the actions being developed by Turismo Lanzarote, the head of said area, Ángel Vázquez, has also spoken, who highlighted that "this report is part of a joint action of the destination, reorienting a multitude of variables that provide us with valuable information for strategic decision-making".

It is expected that the three economists will soon meet at a press conference with agents from the sector, as well as with technicians from the area who are leading this action within the Island Corporation. The president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, and the head of the Department of Tourism, Ángel Vázquez, will also participate. The objective will be to present both the report and a proposal "for the recovery and positioning of Lanzarote as a safe tourist destination".
