Lola Suárez, one of the most established voices in children's and young adult literature from the islands, has been the author selected to celebrate Canarian Women Writers' Day. She was the protagonist of a tribute event that took place this October 20th at the Santa Cruz venue Espacio La Granja, where institutional recognition was combined with a scenic performance inspired by her work.
"A body of work that is part of the reading experience of many people who found in her books the words they heard at home and a familiar way of telling about their land. That a girl or a boy discovers that their own life has a place in literature can be the beginning of a lifelong relationship with reading." These are the words of the Minister of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture, Migdalia Machín, who was in charge of opening the event and presenting the diploma to the author.
Machín emphasized that "her career as a teacher and writer reminds us that writing for children requires skill and a deep respect for the intelligence of the reader. This tribute partly reflects the gratitude of those who have grown up with her books and invites us to introduce them to new readers, because a work remains alive in the people who read it."
Next, the writer and teacher Ana Belén Hormiga shared a bio-bibliographical profile of Lola Suárez, after which a scenic piece inspired by some of her texts was presented, transporting the audience to the author's literary universe: ‘Lola's Footprint, between the haze and the sea spray’. Directed by Nacho Cabrera, from Teatro La República, it was performed by Sara Álvarez and Toni Báez who, accompanied by Antonio Brito on piano, took a journey through the characters, memory, and identity markers of Lola Suárez's work.
