The Cabildo of Lanzarote has announced that it will "launch a series of actions to combat the illegal dumping of rubble in unauthorized areas, one of the problems that directly affects the island's environment."

This was agreed this Wednesday by the Island Environment Board, which held a meeting to address the problem of waste dumped on the street and "various proposals affecting the environment and ecosystem of Lanzarote."

The meeting was chaired by the Minister of Environment, Ariagona González, and was attended by councilors and environmental technicians from the municipalities of Teguise, Yaiza, San Bartolomé, Tías, Arrecife and Tinajo, as well as representatives of environmental associations, who have been denouncing the lack of solutions to this problem for months.

“The dumping of rubble in unauthorized areas damages the image of the island and our ecosystem. Taking care of the environment around us is a task that involves us all and we must act with civility and common sense,” says Ariagona González.

The members of the board have shown their "willingness to provide a solution to this problem", committing to carry out information and awareness campaigns aimed at citizens so that they know where to dispose of waste and rubble on the island correctly.

On the other hand, the Cabildo affirms that "cleaning work will continue in the areas affected by the misuse of public spaces when disposing of waste and rubble" and that "sanctions will be reinforced for uncivil behaviors that are registered".

Another of the actions resulting from the meeting is the creation of a collaborative communication platform where the Cabildo, City Councils and environmental associations "dump all the information about the work carried out by each of them, with the aim of fighting this problem in the most effective way possible."
