All the centers of the Rural Schools Collective (CER) of Lanzarote, which participate in the Biosphere Schools program, ended the 2024-25 school year with a day of workshops, games and stories related to nature. Divided into five meetings, the students enjoyed a morning outdoors in which there was no shortage of popular and heritage-based activities.
The Biosphere Schools network is an initiative of the Biosphere Reserve of the Cabildo of Lanzarote. Its counselor, Samuel Martín, has highlighted the importance of addressing ecosocial teachings in public education, "and especially in rural environments, to help retain the population and nurture pride of belonging."
As a novelty, the schools have participated this year in the project Traveling Book of Sayings and Proverbs, whose contents, gathered by students, families, neighbors and teachers, were shared in these end-of-year meetings.
In addition, the educational community dedicated part of the morning to collective reflection on the results of the respective action plans, the challenges and achievements aimed at deepening a participatory educational model linked to the territory and common well-being. In addition to the compilation of sayings, initiatives for sustainable mobility, school gardens and reduction of plastic consumption were developed, among others.
The company Tágora. Estudios e Intervención Social, coordinator of the complementary activities of the Biosphere Schools, has expressed its "satisfaction for the work done, which is an example of holistic coexistence learning and the result of the close collaboration maintained with the educational communities."
