The mayor of San Bartolomé, Alexis Tejera, met this Thursday with the general director of Centers, Infrastructure and Educational Promotion of the Government of the Canary Islands, Laly González, with the aim of giving "the definitive boost" to the construction of the new CEIP El Quintero in the municipality

In the meeting, according to the City Council, both institutions reflected that this should be a priority action, "which will result in the conditions in which children receive their training and consequently in the educational quality of the public system."

"It is time to resolve this need for the well-being of our educational community," said the mayor of San Bartolomé, who added that "the achievement of these works is essential to solve the demand" made by "parents, mothers and the entire teaching community."

A project that "has not gone ahead in eight years"

The current CEIP El Quintero has been located for more than 15 years in Casa Ajei, a building owned by the San Bartolomé City Council, which was proposed as a temporary solution to the saturation of CEIP Ajei. It has 10 classrooms and three modular classrooms, which house 12 groups of students. In this regard, the City Council points out that the project for the construction of the new CEIP El Quintero began as a basic project in 2012, but that "it has not gone ahead in eight years."

Today, the City Council affirms that the definitive project of CEIP El Quintero has all the technical and legal reports from the City Council and is being supervised by the technicians of the General Directorate.

An initial allocation of 500,000 euros

In addition, an initial allocation of 500,000 euros has been introduced in the Budgets of the General Directorate for 2020, so the City Council indicates that "everything indicates that the construction of the long-awaited educational center may begin throughout the current year."

The new center of San Bartolomé has a total budget of 6,629,000 euros and is planned for 18 units of Infant and Primary, which will accommodate approximately 440 children.

"Great effort" by the educational community

"The San Bartolomé City Council has made a great effort to improve the educational infrastructure of the municipality," the mayor also pointed out during the meeting, where he detailed that, together with the constant renovation of the centers, at the end of the last legislature, works of great importance were carried out, such as the conditioning of the patios of the Playa Honda, San Bartolomé and Güime schools, or the repair of bathrooms in Playa Honda and San Bartolomé.

To this we must add the repainting and gardening and maintenance work of the facilities, the integral renovation of the early collection area and the expansion of the school canteen in the CEIP Ajei or the works of the safe school routes in Playa Honda and San Bartolomé. "For this City Council, education and sport are part of our list of priorities and we will not cease in our efforts to demand the essential improvements for San Bartolomé," concluded Tejera.
