Blue flag raising on Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen

Playa Blanca (Playa Grande), Pila de la Barrilla (Playa Chica), Los Pocillos and Matagorda have been flying since Thursday morning the blue flags that certify their exceptionality and compliance with the demanding requirements regarding water quality, services and safety, environmental management, information, environmental education, natural defense and regeneration of natural spaces.

The mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz, led the raising of the 'Blue Flag' on Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen this Thursday, along with the first deputy mayor, Nicolás Saavedra, and the councilor Christopher Notario. José Juan Cruz ratified the City Council's commitment to the conservation of the beaches, the provision of services and environmental management.

The Tías City Council submitted the candidacy of the beaches to the European Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) at the end of last year through the Adeac agency, its Spanish subsidiary. The ceremony for the delivery of the blue flags in the Canary Islands took place on Monday, June 19, in Arucas, a ceremony in which José Juan Cruz was present.

This distinction recognizes the work that is carried out in the municipality to improve the sustainability, accessibility and safety of the beaches. The Tías City Council, through different council departments such as Beaches, Tourism, Environment, Roads and Works and Employment, among others, has carried out numerous works to improve the surroundings of the beaches in recent years.

New accessible areas have been created, shade areas and wooden walkways have been installed, in addition to the conditioning and repair of public toilets, installation of showers and litter bins, and improvement and maintenance of the garden areas.

According to Adeac, more than 2,000 municipalities in 45 countries on five continents participate in Blue Flags. In 2023, Spain increases to 627 blue flags on the beaches and maintains world leadership.
