The Insular Secretariat of Welfare of Nueva Canarias, led by the health worker Yoné Caraballo, has taken up the demands of the Association for the Defense of the Patient of Lanzarote, with whom he met this Monday, demanding a new hospital in Lanzarote.

During the meeting, which was also attended by the Municipal Secretary of NC in Arrecife and Councilor for Hospitality, Commerce and Tourism, Armando Santana, the Association for the Defense conveyed its concerns about the state of public health on the island, regardless of the context of the pandemic. Thus, he made known the "imperative" need for a new hospital to be built "to safely care for chronic patients and those with various pathologies, such as the activation of the hospital participation commission."

For the island secretary of Welfare of NC, Yoné Caraballo, "the occurrence and improvisation in health matters of those responsible for the Ministry of Health in Lanzarote is exemplified in the proposal to build two more floors in the Doctor Molina Orosa Hospital".

"We need new public infrastructures. Lanzarote deserves a hospital with all its functions, such as a heliport that houses a medicalized helicopter with a fixed base on the island", says Yoné Caraballo, who recalls "in the nineties, and with Román Rodríguez being the director of the Canarian Health Service, in the General Hospital of Lanzarote there was a landing area for helicopters".

However, "after more than 20 years we have neither a helicopter, nor a heliport, nor a hospital in conditions", points out the island secretary of Welfare of NC.

Creation of a new Basic Health Zone in Arrecife

In the meeting with the Association for the Defense of the Patient of Lanzarote, Caraballo explained the proposals emanating from his area, which aim to expand the offer of public services in the islands of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, in addition to improving and developing existing ones.

For its part, the organization also gave them the document of proposal for the creation of the Basic Health Zone Arrecife 3, which would concentrate the neighborhoods of Argana Alta, Argana Baja and Maneje, and which proposes not only a health center, but a letter of services independent of the Basic Health Zone of Titerroy, which currently has "more than 47,000 users".

Thus, NC affirms that it will begin a series of actions aimed at "making visible the deficiencies in health matters", and will question those responsible for the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands through parliamentary and political channels. "The objective is to put important issues on the public agenda, such as the hemodynamics unit. The patient of Lanzarote still has less chance of surviving a heart attack than his fellow citizen from Gran Canaria or Tenerife", concludes Caraballo.
