Podemos' primaries for the upcoming local elections are beginning to take shape and a new candidacy has already been announced, in this case for the Arrecife City Council. The first official candidate to head that list is Nona Perera, who in the past elections ran for the Cabildo, although she resigned shortly after.
Perera, whose list obtained two councilors, was then appointed General Director of Cultural Heritage of the Canary Islands Government, under the agreement between her party and the PSOE, NC and ASG in the archipelago. She is currently still holding that position, although she is now preparing for the next elections and hopes to do so by running for Mayor of Arrecife.
To seek the support of the members of the purple formation, Nona Perera has launched a video talking about the city where she was born. "It is not even close to the city it could be. After years of looting and corruption, it still has many shortcomings," she says, listing the shortcomings of the capital.
In addition, she highlights "three historical challenges" that she believes must be addressed: the improvement of social services, attention to neighborhoods and "cultural memory" and the conservation of heritage.
Perera says that she has the "support and involvement of an honest, solvent and dedicated human team" behind her candidacy, and says that she is committed to "a list of popular unity".
In the past elections, Podemos ran in alliance with Equo, under the brand of Lanzarote en Pie - Sí Podemos. Then it obtained three councilors in the capital, although it currently has no representation. And the fact is that two councilors belonged to Equo and the head of the list, Leticia Padilla, left the purple formation.
Now, Nona Perera aspires to head the new list, while the councilor who entered the Cabildo in her place, Jorge Peñas, has applied to occupy the first place on the list to the Island Corporation.
