Migdalia Machín Tavío revalidates her position as head of the Island Secretariat of the Canarian Coalition in Lanzarote with an overwhelming majority of the 181 votes cast by the delegates attending the 2021 Island Congress. Of these, 178 were in favor, 1 against and there were two abstentions. In the new Island Executive, Machín will be accompanied by Echedey Eugenio as head of the Organization Secretariat and by Antonio Callero as Deputy Secretary of Organization.

Also, during the congress day this Saturday, the members that are part of the Island Political Council and the National Political Council were approved. The next step, as Machín explained, will be the renovation of the seven local committees and the new local secretaries will also join the new Island Executive.

After her election, the nationalist leader thanked the support of the entire party and recalled the importance of the grassroots in the development and future of the organization. “Municipalism is part of the DNA of our political organization.”

On the other hand, she did not hesitate to affirm that “CC is a party made to govern and whenever it is possible to manage under nationalist policies, I will try”. In this line, she stressed that in her work policy she will always build bridges to make that possible. “I am a person of dialogue and consensus and I will continue to do everything possible to ensure that this organization tries to add to nationalist forces that have an ideology equal to ours.”

And, as she highlighted in her speech, “we are the different ones, the rare ones, those who do not let ourselves be managed either from Génova or from Ferraz. We have our own name and autonomy and we only owe ourselves to our people, not to anyone from Madrid telling us what to do.”

She also stressed that “we start from the island to the Archipelago, and not the other way around as the state parties do. We, the Canarian Coalition, understand the Canary Islands from balance and solidarity and in that system, Lanzarote represents a fundamental part. We are the third island, the third capital of the Canary Islands and as such, we deserve respect.”

Precisely, and following the same line, the general secretary of CC, Fernando Clavijo, who arrived accompanied by the secretary of Organization of CC, David Toledo, stressed that Lanzarote has always been a reference within the political organization. “The changes have always come from Lanzarote,” he said, recalling the good results obtained in the 2019 elections and stating that “we are facing very difficult times, with a complicated tourist situation, the unnatural pact in the main institutions of the island, the contempt of the Government of the Canary Islands and Spain, the pandemic...”

Clavijo recalled that the strength of CC is in the street and that we must return there when health circumstances allow it. “We are the ones who are going to defend our land; Canarians, progressives and centrists. Men and women from the Canary Islands who are not going to sell ourselves. It is a pride that Migdalia continues to lead the party. I am sure that Lanzarote will be the island from which we are going to reconquer the dignity of all Canarians.”

The closing of the Island Congress of CC Lanzarote 2021 also included representatives of other political formations, including: José Torres Stinga (Platform of the Municipality of Haría) Armando Santana (Nueva Canarias), José Montelongo (Socialist Group of Lanzarote) and Ayoze Corujo, (Canarismo y Democracia Association).

Resolution proposals

During the congress day on Saturday, the presentation and voting of eight resolution proposals that were headed by Echedey Eugenio, Amado Vizcaíno, Ángel Domínguez, Chaxiraxi Niz, David Rocío, Jesús Machín, Carmen Rosa Márquez and Pedro San Ginés.

In them, among other issues, the nationalists demanded more attention and social infrastructure, the creation of an associative network that brings together volunteers and gives them a voice, that CC sets the pace for a different and responsible tourism model, the fight for real equality policies and opportunities between women and men and work to eliminate sexist violence.

They also requested more control over the island's port and airport infrastructures and the development of an Extraordinary Investment Plan so that the town councils can cope with the extraordinary expenses caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

In another of the proposals, the nationalists asked for greater parity in the naming of buildings and public places in Arrecife and, finally, they emphasized the need to prioritize the public nature of renewable energy facilities, proposing that until there is a detailed organization of the spaces for these infrastructures, their proliferation should be stopped.

All these proposals together with the Statute and ideological presentations presented this Friday, will be part of the roadmap of the new Island Executive of CC Lanzarote.
