Following the meeting held this Thursday by the Fiscal Council, several appointments have been made in the prosecutor's office. Thus, María Farnés Martínez-Frigola will be the new superior prosecutor of the Canary Islands, replacing Luis del Río.

The Attorney General of the State, Álvaro García Ortiz, has decided to appoint his predecessor, Dolores Delgado, as head of the Chamber of the Robed Prosecutor's Office of the Supreme Court.

According to fiscal sources informed to Efe, the advisory body of the Attorney General's Office has been divided in two when addressing the appointment of the also former Minister of Justice and former socialist deputy.

Of the 12 members of the Fiscal Council, five have voted in favor, including Álvaro García Ortiz. On the other hand, six have voted against, all of them from the Association of Prosecutors (AF), the majority in the career, of conservative leaning and the one with the most weight in the Council, who have supported Luis Rueda for the position.

The remaining vote, that of the member of the Professional and Independent Association of Prosecutors (APIF), Salvador Viada, has abstained as his wife, the Anti-Corruption prosecutor Teresa Gálvez, is running for the same position as Delgado.

Alejandro Luzón, almost unanimous support

On the other hand, Alejandro Luzón has obtained almost unanimous support. In this way, he revalidates for five more years the position of chief Anti-Corruption prosecutor, one of the key positions that was at stake in what has been the second meeting of the Fiscal Council.

The position of lieutenant prosecutor of the National Court will be held from now on by Marta Durantez Gil, who until now worked in the Technical Secretariat of the Attorney General's Office, a body that was directed for two and a half years by the current attorney general.

In this case, the council has also been divided, as the members of the majority association and that of APIF have supported Miguel Ángel Carballo, a prosecutor of conservative character with a long career in the National Court and who has been in charge of that position in the last five years.

The Fiscal Council has also appointed Santiago Herráiz and Juan Bautista Calvo-Rubio as superior prosecutor of La Rioja and chief prosecutor of Málaga, respectively. Meanwhile, Pedro Javier Jiménez Lafuente and Juan Baratech will continue to head those of Granada and Huesca.

The criminal protection of animals has been reinforced

In addition to these appointments, the Council has approved a favorable report to the draft Organic Law amending the Penal Code, in matters of animal abuse. The text, according to the information provided by the Prosecutor's Office, reinforces the criminal protection of animals and provides more adequate tools to prosecute animal abuse and abandonment.
