The art and education project Nomadic Ktálisis, launched in the middle of the last academic year, resumes this quarter with events in La Gomera and Lanzarote. Students from institutes in both islands receive classes from artists Rafael Arocha and Roberto F. Perdomo, respectively, until December. It is the regional extension of the ‘Ktálisis’ project from the La Regenta Art Center (Government of the Canary Islands), which reaches the entire archipelago within the framework of the Ministry of Culture's Cultural Rights Plan.
At the IES San Sebastián in La Gomera, Rafael Arocha teaches ‘The Mirror Gaze’, a pedagogical proposal in which photographic practice is the vehicle for students to develop their critical spirit in the face of the flood of images they consume daily. “We seek to develop the analysis and reading of images, and the critical review of a language that affects us all,” Arocha explained during a session.
In parallel, at the IES in Altavista (Lanzarote), artist and cultural mediator Roberto F. Perdomo has launched ‘The Small History of the Canary Islands’. The first sessions have been marked by a multicultural focus and around Canarian heritage. Among other activities, students have worked directly with clay, connecting with the ancestral techniques of aboriginal pottery. The project seeks to turn students into mahos (guardians of heritage): “We want to build territorial citizenship where the sense of belonging does not depend on origin, but on shared commitment to the care of the place we inhabit,” Perdomo points out.
About the program
Among its general objectives, Nomadic Ktálisis seeks to foster students' artistic and creative abilities, as well as the learning and understanding of artistic languages. It also aims to promote the development of critical thinking, creative autonomy, integral development, and students' ability to actively participate in projects.
To articulate Nomadic Ktálisis, projects from seven artists from different disciplines with a pedagogical profile and experience were selected. The program began in the last quarter of the previous year in Gran Canaria, with 'Total Void' by artist Leiko at CEIP Iberia.
After the stop in La Gomera and Lanzarote these months, the activity will continue from January to March with 'Parallel Visions', by Alicia Pardilla, in El Hierro; ‘Through the Net’, by Laura González, in Tenerife; and Naza Martín with 'Catalog of Species' in La Palma. Finally, it will be Elodie Tchaves with 'Architecture and Play' who will close this first edition of the program from April to June 2027.
