Morales pointed out during his speech on the Buenos Días program on Radio Lanzarote that, unfortunately, these types of actions, which have to do with the breaking and theft of material or the indiscriminate painting of the facilities, "continue to occur."
"We must all be aware that public money is being invested there, money from all citizens, and they are facilities for the enjoyment of all citizens," he commented, adding that they have no other choice from the City Council, taking into account that none of the measures they have adopted have worked, than to "appeal to the sensitivity of everyone" to try to make the uncivilized aware that they should not act in the way they are doing at the moment.
Progress of the works
Regarding the progress of the works, Luis Morales confirmed that they are progressing at a good pace, and that public tenders will soon be opened for the provision of material for the facilities. In this sense, he expressed his conviction that both sports complexes will be fully operational during the course of next year.
Loss of level in the San Ginés tournaments
On the other hand, Luis Morales negatively assessed the follow-up and the influx of spectators who attended the different sports tournaments that were organized on the occasion of the San Ginés 2005 festivities.
In this sense, the Councilor for Sports recognized that while it is true that the level of the competitions was lower than in past editions, since the entity of the invited teams was below previous campaigns, the attendance of public was quite scarce, despite the fact that the gratuity of said events had been decreed.
The mayor recalled the prestige and renown that these tournaments had in the past, when they were a reference not only on the Island but throughout the Archipelago, and had stands packed with the public. In this regard, Morales pointed out that times have changed, and that now, due to the generalization of sports broadcasts on television, people are tired of watching football and other sports, and no longer go to the fields as they did before to vibrate with the tournaments that were held on the occasion of the San Ginés festivities. he described as
Canarian Wrestling Tournament
In any case, the mayor saved the Canarian wrestling tournament from the burning, which he considered a "resounding success" since the stands of the Arrecife Sports City recorded the appearance of the great occasions. "I don't remember such crowded stands in many years, which encourages us to continue working to maintain the same level in future editions," said Morales, who highlighted the great spectacle offered by both teams, since it was possible to bring together the most outstanding figures of vernacular sport in the capital's arena.
Economic restrictions
Luis Morales blamed the budgetary limitations for the loss of brilliance of some tournaments that were once as prestigious as the football tournament or the handball competition, which brought together the best teams on the continent on the Island.
In this sense, Morales indicated that it is often preferable to subsidize our teams to participate in prestigious tournaments outside the Island, than to bring great teams for a fortune that finally leave all their stars at home and come to Lanzarote plagued with substitutes, which is not at all attractive to the viewer.
Variation of dates
Likewise, the Councilor for Sports pointed out that the area he directs is considering a possible variation of dates for the San Ginés 2006 Football Tournament, due to the tight schedule and the increasingly early start of the league, which this year has been brought forward to the end of August, which made it very difficult to have teams of greater lineage.
Thus, the mayor pointed to the beginning of the month of August, when the teams are immersed in full pre-season, as a possible date to celebrate this tournament from now on, which the mayor hopes will recover the prestige it had in the past and which was attractive to the main teams in the country.
