The new Government Group of the Cabildo, formed by PSOE and PP, will create the Island Housing Institute to "face the serious housing problems suffered by the island and suffered, unfortunately, by numerous families of Lanzarote." The ordinary Plenary held this Wednesday took note, in its tenth point, of this agreement that was already approved in the Island Government Council held on July 9.
Under this agreement, the initiation of work for the creation and implementation of the Island Housing Institute was approved in order to "promote adequate coordination between administrations with housing powers to ensure greater effectiveness in the design and implementation of active public housing policies that allow to respond to the extraordinary housing needs suffered by the island", explains the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, M.ª Dolores Corujo.
The lack of housing in Lanzarote has become, in recent years, one of the main problems for a large part of the population. It should be noted that the latest public housing promotions in Lanzarote were delivered in the 2011/2015 legislature, while the beneficiaries of the Young Mortgage have been trapped in a real trap that forces them to pay interest above the market.
"In fact," says Corujo, "the most vulnerable families have been hit, not only by the lack of planning, foresight and promotion of public housing on the island, but also by the increase in rents caused, to a large extent, by the extraordinary increase in vacation rentals, which has transcendental consequences not only on the increase in rent, but on the habitability of the island itself."
"Faced with this dramatic situation," the president stresses that "the new Government of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has assumed, as one of its main challenges, to face this problem and seek solutions, despite not having direct powers in housing matters."
Thus, through this Island Housing Institute, "the first Institution can play a very important role in coordinating between the town councils and the Government of the Canary Islands and act as an active agent in the location and provision of land as well as in the drafting of projects, contracting, awarding and even in the pre-financing of public housing promotions," says Corujo.
Finally, as it was revealed in the plenary session, the Housing Institute may be constituted under any of the modalities provided by law, that is, through a public company or any other legal figure that is specified for that purpose.
