The mayor of the Tinajo City Council, Jesús Machín, wanted to respond to the information about possible brine spills in the La Santa area, which "affect both one of the best surfing waves in Europe and the fishing sector of Tinajo and the rich biodiversity of the area."
Machín confirms his position regarding the Modernization and Improvement of Irrigation in the Northwest Zone of Lanzarote project, a plan requested by the Tinajo City Council and financed by the Ministry, the Government of the Canary Islands, and the Island Council, "which aims to solve the problem for agricultural water irrigation."
"From the first moment, I have always said that the emissary should go in the El Picacho area and, as a priority point, I understand and even more so with the reports obtained, that it should be done with a filtration well since there are no aquifers in the area. A good proposal to not delay the project further would be to award it in phases, first the project and, in a second phase, the emissary and the filtration well," Machín points out.
"As mayor, I will never support the part of the project that consists of dumping brine through the emissary in the area where it is planned, knowing that there are alternatives. From the council, it is proposed to transport the spills to the vicinity of the El Picacho area or replace the emissary with a filtering well. We will never allow it to be dumped in that place," concludes the mayor of Tinajo.
