Fiber optics has begun to be deployed in the coastal town of Los Cocoteros, in Teguise. “Its implementation is allowing high-capacity connectivity for residents when browsing or watching high-definition television, in addition to providing digital services to companies, improving their efficiency and competitiveness”, declared the mayor of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort.
Betancort assures that “there has been a lot of fighting and several meetings have been held with the directors of the telephone company in the Canary Islands to achieve this total coverage.”
“In the last phase, the installation was carried out in Guatiza, Soo and Los Valles, where we reached more than 700 homes, totaling 12,500 in the entire municipality”, explains Eugenio Robayna as Councilor for Roads and Works. “Now we are working in Los Cocoteros, after passing through Las Cabreras, until we can cover 100% of the municipality, with the company's commitment to also supply the island of La Graciosa”, he adds.
The City Council assures that in 2018 it submitted a claim to the service operator, "starting said commitment from Telefónica to bring fiber optics to all the nuclei of Teguise through an investment of more than 1.5 million euros". This improvement, according to the Council, has included the improvement of the fixed and mobile network, "having access to the real symmetrical 600 megas which allows high-definition TV, online games without delay, file sharing, streaming, videoconferencing of maximum quality and ultra-fast Internet browsing, even from several devices simultaneously without the quality of the connection suffering any modification."
The Council points out that in 2019 the works were undertaken to bury the network in the towns of Costa Teguise, Tahiche, Nazaret, Tao, Mozaga and Tiagua, which then continued in the town of Villa and its Historic Site, as well as in the northern area of Teguise. In addition, they detail that in 2020 and 2021 the implementation was completed in Caleta de Famara, Teseguite, Los Valles, Guatiza, Muñique and surroundings, with the town of El Mojón pending, in the process of being awarded pending resolution of technical issues that affect private properties, and Caleta de Caballo, which is pending exclusive channeling from Soo.
