The Insular Water Council of Lanzarote has completed the drainage works in the Barranco del Hurón in Costa Teguise, an intervention aimed at improving safety, water evacuation capacity, and the environmental condition of the riverbed.
The work was carried out on a section of approximately 350 meters of the discontinuous streambed of the ravine, which flows directly into Las Cucharas beach. The main objective has been to ensure adequate drainage, reduce sediment accumulation, and reinforce the stability of the banks.
"This work is added to the initiatives promoted by the Insular Water Council to adapt and condition all our ravine beds in prevention of intense rainfall episodes, such as the one that occurred last April and which mainly affected the capital and Costa Teguise," according to the Lanzarote Cabildo's Water Counselor and Vice President of the Insular Water Council, Domingo Cejas."With these works, we guarantee the safety of both residents and visitors and respond to the request made by the mayor of Teguise," adds Cejas. For her part, the mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque, thanked the Minister of Water and the technicians of the Insular Water Council for "the inter-administrative collaboration provided to carry out the tender, award, and development of the works" and pointed out that "today the residents of Costa Teguise and those who visit us can be safer because we have improved natural water infrastructures, such as the Barranco del Hurón, also managing to beautify this picturesque space in our municipality."
The works have consisted of the clearing and cleaning of vegetation along the riverbed; the removal of accumulated earth, shrubs, and trees; the filling with selected material and gravel in eroded areas; the construction of a new stone wall in the final section, behind the Red Cross headquarters. A layer of gravel has been placed to level the final terrain, and other complementary actions have been carried out, such as de-stoning, repositioning of riprap, grading, and leveling.
The site survey report was signed on September 26, the works began on October 29, and have concluded in a shorter period than that established in the bidding process, which set an execution period of two months and two weeks.
The project, financed entirely with the Water Council's own funds and awarded with a budget of 87,823.41 euros, has been executed by the company Transportes y Excavaciones SCCATMECA S.L.
