The Governing Council of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has given the green light to two calls for competitive subsidies totaling 356,000 euros, aimed at strengthening sports activity on the island, supporting clubs and federations, and promoting the conservation and growth of native and traditional Canarian sports and motor games such as Latin sailing, Canarian wrestling or Canarian ball.

The first of the calls, endowed with 168,000 euros, aims to cover the organizational costs of official and non-official competitions held in Lanzarote and La Graciosa during the 2024/2025 season. This aid will cover, among other concepts, arbitration costs, coordination, advertising, and the acquisition of trophies and medals, as well as the management and administration expenses of the federations that organize official competitions on the island.

The second call, with a total amount of 188,000 euros, is focused on the promotion and encouragement of native and traditional sports and motor games, including the organization of federated regular leagues and the promotion of Canarian Wrestling by Lanzarote clubs.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, stressed that these lines of aid "are a clear sign that sport is an investment in health, social cohesion and identity." "We not only support those who compete and organize sporting events, but we also aim to keep alive our signs of cultural identity, such as Canarian Wrestling and other native sports that are part of the history and soul of the island," he asserted.

For his part, the Councilor for Physical Activity and Sports, Juan Monzón, stressed that with these subsidies "we consolidate our commitment to island sports, supporting both the organization of competitions and the promotion of our native disciplines."

He also wanted to highlight the work of all the sports entities of Lanzarote and La Graciosa "that, with their effort and dedication, contribute to the formation of people, the promotion of healthy lifestyles and the projection of the island as an active territory with a strong cultural identity."

The bases and deadlines for the submission of applications will be published soon in the Official Gazette of the Province and in the electronic headquarters of the Cabildo of Lanzarote.
