The Federation of Services of CCOO Canarias has shown this Tuesday its support to the workers of the hotel Meliá Sol Lanzarote, who next Friday, February 7 and Saturday, February 8, begin a strike with stoppages in activity.
After the concentrations in front of the doors of several hotels and the headquarters of the tourism employers, this stoppage is "one more example of the actions we will carry out until we reach the general strike of the hotel sector in the Canary Islands during Holy Week".
These stoppages will take place during the time slots: Friday 7 (9:00-11:30 and 16:00-18:00 hours) and Saturday 8 (13:00-15:00 and 20:00-22:00).
"We have to say loud and clear to the tourism employers in the Canary Islands, that if they want to play hotels, they should buy a Monopoly," the union emphasized in a press release. "You don't play with the life and health of the workers," he continued.
Comisiones Obreras has warned that, despite having surpassed "all the records" of tourist billing in 2024, with 24,000 million euros and exceeded 17 million tourists, "we continue to observe how the employers regret the lack of personnel and constantly repeat the expression labor absenteeism". Thus, instead of betting on "measures that favor health at work, alleviate workloads and improve conditions".
Meanwhile, "they condemn the workers of the sector to survive with an extremely precarious salary, taking into account the high cost of living on the non-capital islands".
Spending per room in hotels grew 8% in December 2024, being the second best data in the country. Hotel companies in the Canary Islands managed to establish on average in 2024, higher prices in all months of the year compared to 2023, capturing in December 50% of all foreigners on vacation in Spain.
The union has highlighted that "all the data show that the Canary Islands enjoys a privileged and attractive position for tourists and investors, but that confronts with the reality of the sector, where there is no predisposition to improve the conciliation between work and personal life and decrease an increasing workload".
