CC Lanzarote denounces the "unequal treatment" of the Canary Islands Government when applying the Covid restrictions

Coalición Canaria Lanzarote has once again denounced the "double standard" used by the Canary Islands Government when applying the measures corresponding to the different levels of health alert due to Covid and has demanded that both the president of the Canary Islands Executive and the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote show their faces and explain "if it is that, perhaps,“the virus in Tenerife is less contagious than in Lanzarote and no one has told us”.

The decision, on the one hand, to raise Lanzarote and La Graciosa to level 2, with the return to the total application of the restrictions corresponding to that level, and on the other hand, to raise Tenerife to phase 4, but maintaining, for example, the capacity of 3 and the closure of 2 for the hotel industry, has been defined by the Lanzarote nationalists as a "real joke".

To all this we must add that the accumulated incidence (AI) in Lanzarote and La Graciosa is the lowest in the entire archipelago, even lower than El Hierro, according to the report corresponding to July 21 with consolidated data from the 20th.

"Our hotel industry, at level 4, was forced to close from six in the afternoon, while in Tenerife they are going to keep it open until twelve at night", said the island secretary, Migdalia Machín. "Although I am happy for the sector on that island, it does not seem fair to ours, which is suffering, in addition, the consequences of the lack of aid that other islands do have, since, as is known, here they have arrived late and badly", she added.

Thus, the nationalists have once again requested the appearance in plenary of the president of the Canary Islands Government, Ángel Víctor Torres, to explain the reasons that lead him to use that "double standard", and of the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Mª Dolores Corujo "to give an account of her reasons for allowing such an offense".

For his part, the Secretary of Organization, Echedey Eugenio, accuses both leaders of being "the only ones responsible for the terrible economic impact that this situation is having on the island's economy". "What explanation do they plan to give to the businessmen who have taken staff out of the ERTE and who have made improvements in their businesses, reinventing themselves to adapt to Phase 1 and who must now return to the measures of Phase 2? Are they still not even considering an economic rescue plan for Lanzarote and La Graciosa and do they trust to satisfy the business community with the scarce aid that they have begun to grant a year and a half after the start of the pandemic?”, asks Eugenio.

While the nationalists await answers that they believe "will surely never come", they point out that Lanzarote and La Graciosa must remain with all the restrictions of level 2 "at least until August 5".

In this regard, they recall that the capacity in hotels and restaurants is reduced again to 75% on terraces with a maximum of six diners per table, and to
50% indoors, with a maximum of four diners per table. At the bar, consumption will only be allowed in groups of a maximum of two people.

Meetings will be limited to six people when they are not cohabitants and the opening of nightlife is prohibited again, which is only allowed in level 1.

Finally, bars and restaurants must close their doors before 00:00 hours, that is, the same as Tenerife can do in level 4.
