The Nationalist Group in the Arrecife City Council regrets "the null commitment of the Government of the Canary Islands to the elderly of the capital, by continuing to delay the opening of the Day Center, thus preventing the activities suspended since the beginning of the pandemic from being restarted, at least with relative normality".

This is stated by the spokesperson, Echedey Eugenio, who explains that "after several attempts in the Arrecife Plenary to try to move forward initiatives that would improve the situation (such as the City Council resuming the management of the activities) and that would allow the opening of the Day Center (which users demand so much), and taking into account that the City Council opened the rest of the municipal centers months ago, we asked our parliamentarian Jesús Machín to ask the Government what the opening times of this center were going to be and we have found the sad reality that during all these months, the Canarian Executive has done nothing two years after the start of the pandemic”.

Thus, according to the information provided by the Ministry of Social Rights, Equality, Diversity and Youth, the response received by the parliamentarian of the Nationalist Group (CC-PNC-AHI) Jesús Machín is that “at this time, only the Risk Prevention Service needs to visit the Arrecife Senior Center, so its opening is imminent”.

For the nationalists, "a statement that, however, clashes head-on with other aspects contained in the Government's own response, where it is stated that the service contract for carrying out sociocultural, recreational and health promotion activities in the Centers, adapted to the new situation and limited, in the number of users, to the sanitary safety restrictions that are determined, is still being processed". Likewise, it is assured in the document sent to Machín by the Deputy Minister of Relations with Parliament, that the works that have been deemed appropriate by the Technical Office to provide the Center with all the necessary prevention and safety measures (installation of safety screens, signage, posters and PPE), “are in the execution phase”.

In other words, as the nationalist spokesperson, Echedey Eugenio, insists, “either they are deceiving us when they say that the opening of the Center is imminent or they are lying when they say that there is still no contract for the activities and that the works to establish the protection measures are in the execution phase. What is clear is the Government's disinterest in the elderly of our capital”.

With all this, Eugenio emphasizes that “when we talk about the well-being of our elders, we cannot allow them to continue deceiving us, to stop making excuses and reopen the center once and for all with a dignified program of activities for the elders of our city or hand over the keys to the City Council to do so”

So, for the nationalists, "it makes more and more sense for the Arrecife City Council to resume the management of the activities once and for all".
